Australia introduces web filters


Latest news out of Australia on its proposal to start filtering what internet users can search for and what webpage’s they can view, while its aimed at some of the seedier areas of the internet, it is for me the start of a slippery road into George Orwell’s 1984 where we are told what we can do and censorship rules.

This in my mind is not the direction we really need to take as the vast majority of internet users are sensible and legitimate.


Australia intends to introduce filters which will ban access to websites containing criminal content.

The banned sites will be selected by an independent classification body guided by complaints from the public, said Communications Minister Stephen Conroy.

A seven month trial in conjunction with internet service providers found the technology behind the filter to be 100% effective.

However, there has been opposition from some internet users.
