Today Microsoft launched their free replacement for OneCare that had been around for a number of years but want not all that popular, Microsoft are hoping to address this with a simple to use free option as the Get Safe Online campaign estimate that 50% of PCs in the UK have no or out of date security software. Having no security software only plays into the hands of the malware writers who target un-patched and poorly secured PCs, this in turn could cause you to in the best scenario to only have to reinstall your Operating System and software again but in the worst case scenario to have your personal details and banking user/passwords stolen and used illegally.
While I like this idea of simple security that is not difficult to update and manage, I do find that the lack of a few options that OneCare had a bit disappointing, would have loved that the firewall options where left in to manage what applications you wish to allow out through your internet connection a great option for novice users, as the build in one in Windows while good is not easy to use for many.
However this is free to use on as many PCs as you wish, with no signup, only stipulation is that your Windows version is a genuine one as it will check your activation status as part of the install procedure. its worth a try out if you don’t have any security applications on your PC, and I have been testing it from the early beta and the PC I installed it on has had no issues at all.
